Kindergarten transition

The transition to school is an important time in every child’s life.  Some children find it very exciting, others find it extremely daunting.

We want to make this transition as enjoyable as possible.  Each year children who are enrolling in Kindergarten at Rankin’s Springs Public School for the following year will have the opportunity to participate in our transition program.  We strongly encourage all eligible children to participate in this program.  For more information about it please contact the office.

There are a number of other things you can do to help your child transition as smoothly as possible.  These include conveying a positive attitude about school, preparing your child by explaining to them what to expect at school, answering all their questions honestly, and making sure they have opportunities to interact with other children and to get used to being supervised by other adults before starting school—perhaps through a pre-school or playgroup or ‘play dates’ with your friends and their children.

Once your child starts school, your ongoing involvement in their education is invaluable.  Refer to the section headed communication and parent involvement for more information about how you can do this.

Some hints for dropping your child at school on their first day

  • Arrive around 8.45 a.m.;
  • Explain that you cannot stay but that you will be back to pick them up or will meet them when they get off the bus;
  • Avoid ‘long goodbyes’;
  • Make sure you are on time to pick up your child either from school or the bus stop.
  • If your child is upset when you leave them at school (despite your preparations and planning), ‘disappear’ as quickly as you can.  Children generally stop worrying very quickly, particularly if you treat leaving them at school as a happy, exciting occasion.

Students should have following equiements

  • School bag
  • Lunch box with fruit or vegetables for Crunch & Sip, recess, lunch and a drink bottle
  • Hat
  • Library bag (library days only)
  • Paint smock (can be left at school)
  • All equipment is labelled clearly and packed
